I was not prepared for how good the book and its translation would be.

I have to say, I read this book to scratch a completionist itch since it’d recently come out in translation (I suppose I could have tried to read the Japanese version for practice, but that would have been a laborious and frustrating process), and honestly wasn’t expecting that much. It comprises four parts – a more detailed account of Taki’s travails in Mitsuha’s body, village childhood friend Teshigawara’s musings on his feelings towards his hometown, Mitsuha’s little sister Yotsuha’s childish yet precocious thoughts on the behaviours of those close to her, and finally, Mitsuha’s estranged father Toshiki’s strangely moving life story, an account that firmly brings together the various plot strands of the story into stark relief and provides the impetus for the most important plot development of the movie. Another Side:Earthbound is a brief novel that fleshes out some of the narratives of the film Your Name from the perspective of some of its supporting characters.
